1989 vintage

Journalists's comments...

Chambolle-Musigny-La Combe d'Orveau 1989 :

The Vine - Clive Coates : Medium colour. Pretty, supple, elegant nose. Not a great deal of stuffing (48 he/ha) but good fruit and not short. Did a bit of saigner here but not quite enough. Lacks a little punch. Quite good. Charming. Three to four years.

The wine advocate : I also admired the Chambolle-Musigny- La Combe d'Orveau for its elegance. Soft texture, and abundant ripe fruitiness. It, too should be consumed over the next 4-5 years. The Clos Vougeot was disappointing, offering up raisiny, pruny, overripe fruit, althrough it did exhibit fine extract and decent length.

Clos Vougeot 1989 :

The Vine - Clive Coates : This is very good. Fine new oak support of a wine which is intense, concentrated, has very good grip and above all excellent rich fruit. Long and complex. Full and meaty. Very elegant. Fine. Seven years.

The Wine spectator : Excellent and understated, with toasty berry and plum flavors and silky tannins. Try in 1993.

Richebourg 1989 :

The vine - Clive Coates - juin 2004 : Fine, full, mature colour. Grilled nuts and coffee on the nose. Fresh, stylish and very composed. This is obsolutely à point. Medium-full body. Velvety-smooth. Today more enjoyable to drink than the 1990, though the latter is more concentrated and better in the long run. Ripe and complex. Very elegant and very harmonious. Very long and lovely. Very fine indeed. Nox-2020. 19.5

The Vine - Clive Coates : Rather more closed but richer and more concentrated. Very fine, complex, luscious fruit. Full, rich and meaty on the palate. Very good grip. Very good intensity. This is very elegant and very long on the palate. Very fine. Eight years.

The wine advocate : The Richebourg was a superb wine, with gorgeous, medium dark ruby color, a penetrating fragrance of sweet plums, toasty new oak, and minerals. In the mouth, there is fabulous concentration, a wonderfully round, opulent texture, and persistence on the palate that lasts for more than a minute. This Richebourg's only limitation is that it will have to be drunk over the next 6-7 years. A Christopher Cannan (Europvin ) Selection, various importers.

The wine spectator : Decadent, with entense, gamy, smoky fruity flavors, velvety tannins and an utralong, flavorful finish. Try from 1994 to 1998.

Vosne-Romanée 1989 :

The Vine - Clive Coates : This is meatier and fatter. Good stylish fruit. Quite voluptuous in a medium-weight, easy-to-appreciate, reasonably-quick-to-evolve way. Good intensity. Long on the finish and elegant. Five years.

The wine advocate : The delicious, sweet, oaky, spicy, generously endowed Vosne-Romanée should make tempting drinking over the 4-5 years.
